Hi, I’m David. The title of the website might give the impression I am in watchmaking school, but this is not the case. I have taken a few online classes, but I am a watch collector and horology is my hobby. I try to document my mostly unguided learning journey and hope others might find some elements interesting.
While on my journey to learn more about horology, I started by learning about how movements work by reading books, online resources, watching videos (especially the Watch Repair Channel on Youtube), and taking courses (from learnwatchmaking.com). However, I struggled to find resources explaining what makes a watch movement better than another.
The Naked Watchmaker, the Watch Guy and 17jewels deconstructed watches and were an invaluable source of knowledge, but they did not necessarily take apart the movements I was interested in. I decided one way to improve my knowledge was to take apart cheap movements bought on Ebay and take pictures along the way to analyse them later. I realized that this could also be useful to others and created this website.
On it you will find both single movement deconstructions and thematic issues illustrated with several movements, my attempts at tinkering with watch movements, and the watches I made (with bought movements, but the rest 3D printed base on my designs). I hope you will enjoy it and please contact me when you notice one of the number of errors it surely contains.
